This book aims to initiate among students and other readers critical and interdisciplinary reflections on key problems concerning development, gender relations, peace and environment, with a special emphasis on North-South relations. This volume offers a selection of the author's research in different parts of the world during 50 years of contributing to an interdisciplinary scientific debate and addressing social answers to urgent global problems. After the author's biography and bibliography, the second part analyses the development processes of several countries in the South that resulted in a dynamic of underdevelopment. The deep-rooted gender discrimination is also reflected in the destructive exploitation of natural resources and the pollution of soils, water and air. In Costa Chica, the southeastern sector of the Mexican state of Guerrero, with its principal center in Acapulco, strong migratory currents have taken place from the interior toward the coast. The migrants are mainly poor Indians, offering cheap underqualified labor. In some instances, a racial dimension contributes to an economically based tension between the migrants & permanent coastal inhabitants. The poor peasant is faced with two realistic alternatives: work as a sharecropper, or seasonal employment in the tourist-oriented industry of Acapulco. The economic condition of the peasant is illustrated by a study of the farmers of the Coalan region, which shows the capitalist production system gradually supplanting the small farmers & orienting them toward the creation of ever-new consumer needs. As a result, the farmers have few choices left. Deprived of land, subject to manipulation by their own leaders who are promoting rapid capitalist development of the region, they are resigned to pressure for increased productivity & more intense exploitation. In this process, traditional forms of peasant life are dissolving, & a new proletarian consciousness is being developed. S. Karganovic.
